What is glycerin in soap?
Share
Our handmade natural soap bars are rich in naturally occurring glycerin - an ingredient that is produced as a by-product of the saponification process when making soap. So what's so great about glycerin in soap and why do you need it in your skincare products?
Natural soap ingredients
Glycerin in soap is very valuable. In fact, large soap making companies often extract the naturally-occurring glycerin from their manufactured soap and sell it to other skincare companies to use as an ingredient in moisturisers and shampoos. Glycerin is a fantastic addition to shampoo as it adds a luxurious feel and works to keep hair hydrated. That's one of the reasons why we include glycerin in our shampoo bars.
The glycerin in our luxury handmade soap is produced naturally and of exceptional quality thanks to the premium quality oils and shea butter that we use in our formulations. These oils include coconut oil, rice bran oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil, shea butter and castor oil - all of which have incredible benefits for the skin.
Glycerin can also be derived from vegetable sources, manufactured in a lab or produced from tallow (rendered animal fat), so always be aware of the origin of the glycerin in skincare products before you buy (especially if you are vegetarian or vegan). Rest assured the glycerin in our natural soap bars is 100% vegan and we only use natural vegetable glycerin in our hydrating shampoo bars.
The benefits of glycerin in soap
Glycerin in soap is an incredible natural ingredient that acts as a humectant, attracting moisture into the skin. When using a glycerin-rich soap as part of your natural skincare routine, your skin will soon begin to reap the benefits. After cleansing with a natural soap bar the high glycerin content of the soap bar will help to retain moisture in your skin by creating a natural barrier to keep that moisture locked in.
That's why after using a glycerin-rich all-natural soap, your skin will feel luxuriously soft, smooth, and moisturised.
How much glycerin in soap?
The glycerin content of our luxury handmade soap (Shea Butter Collection) is a minimum of 8%, making it the fifth-highest ingredient in our natural soap bars. This is one of the reasons why our soap is so moisturising and leaves your skin feeling so soft and smooth. And that's why you'll see a big difference in your skin after using it.
You will often see soap advertised as glycerin soap, but the truth is that all soap handmade in small batches is naturally rich in glycerin. Often, manufactured soap will have glycerin added - whether it's derived from vegetables, animals, or made in a laboratory.
Skin friendly soaps
Commercial soap bars contain harsh chemicals that strip the skin of its natural moisture barrier. Making the switch to all natural soap is an easy bathroom swap that will help to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, and will help to reduce your plastic bathroom waste.
Our natural soap bars only contain natural ingredients and we never use 'nature identical' colourants or fragrance oils, which are produced artificially in a lab. We just use the good stuff so you get clean, healthy skin, naturally.
