How to Plant Seed Paper: Grow Wildflowers from Skincare Packaging

At Bloom In Soap, we believe that beautiful skin shouldn't come at the cost of our beautiful planet. If you’ve recently treated yourself to our nourishing skincare, you might have noticed something extra special about our packaging.

Our handmade soap bars are wrapped in zero-waste wildflower seed paper. The labels on our hand cream jars and whipped body butter jars are completely plantable, and even the gift tags on our luxury gift boxes can be grown into flowers.

Instead of tossing your packaging into the recycling bin, you can plant it directly into the ground or a pot. Our innovative, plantable labels are infused with over 25 varieties of UK native wildflowers, proudly produced at a traditional UK paper mill. Once planted, the biodegradable paper naturally breaks down in the soil, allowing the wildflower seeds to germinate, sprout, and bloom - creating a small but meaningful haven for bees, butterflies, and other vital pollinators.

If you're ready to turn your skincare routine into a mini wildflower meadow, here's exactly how to do it.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Plant Your Labels

Growing wildflowers from your Bloom In Soap packaging is incredibly simple and makes a wonderful, mindful gardening project for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Follow these three simple steps to get started:

1.Soak the Paper: 30 Seconds.

Gently tear your soap wrap, jar label, or gift tag into smaller pieces. Place the pieces into a bowl of warm water and let them soak for about 30 seconds. This softens the paper and hydrates the embedded seeds, signalling to them that it's time to wake up and grow.

2.Plant and Cover:1cm Deep.

Place your pre-soaked paper pieces into a pot filled with soil, or directly into a cleared patch of earth in your garden. Cover the paper lightly with about 1cm of soil. Burying them too deeply will prevent the tiny shoots from reaching the sunlight, so keep it shallow!

3.Water and Wait:Patience is Key.

Give the soil a thorough watering. The key to germination is keeping the paper and soil consistently moist—never let it completely dry out. Nature takes time, and germination can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the process.

Planting FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

To give your native UK wildflowers the absolute best start in life, we’ve rounded up the answers to our most frequently asked planting questions:

What time of year can I plant my labels?

The Autumn Window (Best Results): It is always best to plant your labels during the autumn months. Many UK native wildflower seeds require a natural winter chill -  a process called stratification - to break their dormancy. Planting in autumn gives the seeds a cosy winter under the ground, resulting in a spectacular, vibrant wildflower show the following spring.

The Spring Window: You can also plant your labels in early spring. If you choose this route, you may see green shoots appear by mid summer, or they may wait out the year and burst into bloom the following spring.

Where do I plant my labels?

You have two options depending on your space and the time of year:

Option 1: Start Indoors on a Windowsill (Great for Spring)

Get your seeds going indoors by planting them in a small pot. Give the soil a good watering. To give them an extra boost, create a mini "greenhouse" microclimate: place a clear compostable bag over the top of the pot and secure it with a piece of string. Place it on a warm, sunny windowsill and keep the soil watered and moist. Once the shoots appear and grow strong, you can safely transplant them out into your garden or a larger patio container.

Option 2: Plant Directly into the Garden

Find a sunny spot in your garden beds. Gently rake the soil to loosen it up, place your pre-soaked seed paper flat on the earth, and cover it with 1cm of soil.

Do I need to buy special compost?

No! This is the best news for lazy gardeners. Wildflowers actually thrive much better in nutrient-poor soil. If the soil is too rich or packed with commercial fertilisers, grasses and weeds will outcompete the delicate wildflowers. The ordinary, untouched soil in your garden flowerbeds or a basic topsoil is more than adequate to get them blooming.

Why Wildflowers Matter: The Benefits for Nature

By choosing natural skincare wrapped in plantable packaging, you're actively participating in the restoration of local ecosystems.

Over the last century, the UK has lost roughly 97% of its wildflower meadows due to intensive farming and urban development. This habitat loss has had a devastating ripple effect on our insect populations.

When your Bloom In Soap labels transform into flowers, they provide essential food and habitats:

Nectar for Pollinators: Bees, bumblebees, hoverflies, and butterflies rely heavily on native wildflowers for nectar and pollen.

Biodiversity Boost: A single square metre of wildflowers can support hundreds of insect species, which in turn feed local birds, hedgehogs, and bats.

A Healthier Planet: Wildflowers have deep root systems that help stabilise the soil, prevent erosion, and improve local water filtration. From Bathroom to Bloom: Every time you wash with our small-batch natural soaps, hydrate with our rich hand creams, or pamper yourself with our creamy body butters, you aren't just choosing toxin-free, chemical-free ingredients for your body - you are actively planting a brighter, greener future for all of us!
