Soaptember is a campaign designed to encourage people across the world to ditch plastic bottles of liquid hand soap, for lovely bars of soap. The brainchild behind the initiative is Emerald Grove Studio who's idea is to inspire people to replace their plastic bathroom and kitchen products, with soap bars. Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the fight against plastic waste, with discarded plastic gloves littering our streets, and empty plastic bottles of hand soap and sanitiser gels piling up in landfills.
How you can take part
Swap bottles for bars this September - you'll be helping to reduce your plastic waste, and you'll be supporting small businesses (just like ours) at the same time!
The impact of plastic on the environment
An incredible 12 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into our oceans EVERY YEAR. Just to give you an idea of what this mountain of plastic looks like, a double-decker bus weighs around 12 tonnes, so that's the equivalent of 1 MILLION plastic double-decker buses. Yes, you did read that correctly. And that's not all - this plastic waste will continue to litter the environment for upwards of 500 years before it breaks down.
This plastic waste is having a devastating effect on our sea life as these creatures get tangled up in this myriad of plastic or ingest it, and the results are often fatal. This is just one of the many reasons why many people are becoming more conscious about where they shop and what products they buy.
Did you know?
The carbon footprint of liquid soap is 25% larger than bar soap
Liquid soap takes 5 times more energy to produce than bar soap
Liquid soap can use 20 times more packaging than bar soap
Most liquid soaps are made from petroleum-based chemicals
Swapping bar soap for liquid soap may be a small step in reducing plastic waste, but it's a start. And a good start at that.
